On April 30, 2010, Telstra and HTC released eagerly awaited software to repair the GPS glitch in the new HTC Desire, which was released in late April 2010.

The HTC Desire's problems began shortly after its release when Telstra mobile phone customers experienced technical difficulties with the Desire’s GPS hardware. Internet mobile phone forums were buzzing with news about the Desire's faulty GPS.

‘HTC and Telstra have been working together to develop a software update that will correct the issue. This update will be available to customers this evening, Friday 30th April (AEST),’ HTC said on their website.

HTC released details of two alternative software updates that will repair the HTC Desire's teething problems, and also introduced a brand new function for the HTC Desire called Voice Search.

Telstra will notify customers of a Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update via mobile internet, Wi-Fi, and for free on the NextG Network. In the notification customers will be well instructed with regard to installation, and Telstra recommends travellers ensure they are in a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Alternatively, HTC Desire customers can download the 150MB software package to their computer from the HTC website. HTC customers are warned to back-up all mobile phone data on a memory card, because the software installation will wipe the memory clean.

HTC may win disgruntled customers back with the surprise gift feature released with the software update. Voice Search is a new function allowing mobile phone users to find information on the net via voice commands.

It's been a rocky road for the HTC Desire's release in Australia, but with the problem fixed and a new Voice Search function, Telstra and HTC should surely win back their customers.
