Mobile phone plans seem to come with so many added extras these days. It can be quite confusing when you are just looking for simple options and cheap call rates. Extras like Internet data, unlimited access to social networking and unlimited SMS and picture messaging are all very good if you use those features . . . but what if you don’t? Thankfully, there are still some great plans out in the market for people who just want simple rates and uncomplicated plans. Here’s some of the best that we’ve found.

Vodafone
Vodafone has a range of mobile phone plans starting for as little as $19. However, the $29 cap plan offers unlimited Vodafone to Vodafone (and 3) network calls, which is a fantastic deal if the rest of your family also use Vodafone. However these plans do require you to sign up for 24 months, so if you are looking for an option that doesn’t lock you in to a contract, Vodafone has a range of “SIM only” plans that still offer great rates (and the unlimited Vodafone – Vodafone calls) without having to commit to a fixed term.

Telstra
Telstra has a range of casual plans that start from $10 per month with no included call value. These plans don’t contain any bells or whistles like data or MMS, and are perfect for those who use a home phone for most communication and just rely on the mobile when out of the house.

Optus
For those who wish to bring their own mobile phone along, Optus has a selection of BYO handset plans where they supply a SIM card. Starting at $10 per month on a 12 month contract (with 2 months free if you sign up online), these plans are perfect for those who want a mobile phone number only for emergencies. However, there isn’t much included call time, so if you are going to use your mobile for more than occasional calls, think about upgrading your plan.

Virgin Mobile

Built specifically for those who only make the occasional call, Virgin’s bean counter plans are perfect for those who don’t require the bells and whistles of modern telecommunications.

What should you choose?

If you are not technically savvy and prefer a phone contract with no hidden charges, the plans above will suit your needs perfectly. However, if you text message friends and family, and make a few calls, the providers above have a range of low-spend plans with included SMS and call caps. Check out our contract plans page for more details.
